Née à Pittsburgh d'un père chirurgien et d'une mère patineuse sur glace, elle a un frère, Jeffrey, et une sœur, Jennifer.
Elle s'oriente tout d'abord vers une carrière dans le patinage artistique, pour lequel elle participe en 1988 au championnat américain junior, mais après une fracture causée par une chute, elle abandonne cette carrière.
Elle obtient son premier rôle au cinéma à 18 ans, dans Deux yeux maléfiques (Due occhi diabolici), une adaptation de deux célèbres nouvelles d'Edgar Allan Poe. Par la suite elle joue dans Jawbreaker aux côtés de Rose McGowan (Paige dans la série Charmed) et Rebecca Gayheart ou encore dans George de la jungle 2.
Elle joue également dans des séries telles que Notre belle famille, Sliders, les mondes parallèles, Roswell ou encore dans la mini-série Disparition (Taken).
Elle est surtout connue pour son interprétation du tout premier vampire apparaissant dans la série Buffy contre les vampires, l'ex-maîtresse d'Angélus, Darla. Elle joue aussi dans le spin-off (série dérivée) de Buffy, Angel, où son interprétation, grâce à l'évolution du rôle, gagne beaucoup en finesse.
En 2006, elle revient sur le petit écran, dans la série Dexter où elle interprète Rita Bennett, la petite amie (puis femme) du personnage principal (Michael C. Hall), et obtient un Satellite Award pour ce rôle. Elle a aussi prêté sa voix au personnage du Commandant Miranda Keyes dans le jeu Halo 2.
En 2008 elle est au cinéma dans trois films, John Rambo, Punisher: War Zone et Saw V.
En 2010, elle apparaît dans la sixième saison de Desperate Housewives à partir de l'épisode 14, en y jouant le rôle de Robin Gallagher, une ancienne strip-teaseuse qui tombe sous le charme de Katherine Mayfair, et finit par s'enfuir avec elle…1
Depuis septembre 2010, elle incarne Stéphanie Powell dans la série diffusée sur ABC, No Ordinary Family. ses audiences insuffisantes ne lui permirent pas d'avoir une deuxième saison.
à la rentrée 2011, on la retrouvera dans la nouvelle série de CBS a gifted man2. Elle sera diffusée le vendredi à 20H.
